Making himself at home...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 258

Kickers (a recent addition to the farm) has been making himself at home. Which is great... however unfortunately he's been a bit adverse to staying in the barn and catching mice as we had hoped.... he prefers to hang out in the garage and has claimed a high shelf previously reserved by our other barn cat.

I've captured his typical pose here in this picture. #oneeyeopen #pretendingtosleep #myfooddishisempty

Second chances...

FFF Photo a Day- Day 252

This affectionate little guy is called Kickers! He's new to the farm and seems to be fitting in real well.

A few months ago we heard about the Winnipeg Humane Society's Barn Buddies program. This program matches kitties that are otherwise unadoptable and may be destroyed with farms that have some heated spaces where they may do well (i.e. barns and farm shops).

It just so happened that our other (15 year old) barn cat was having trouble keeping up on the mice hunting and we thought we may form a mutually beneficial relationship!

Earlier this week we got a call from the Humane Society that Kickers needed a home. The rest is as they say, is history!

Welcome home Kickers!

A shadow of a cat...

FFF Photo a Day - 133

No farm is complete without a barn cat or two....

Meet Shadow! An unusually friendly barn cat that you always found underfoot waiting to be snuggled.

Named for his colouring he was good at blending in to his surroundings... only appearing when he decided it was safe.

Caleb the cat

FFF Photo a Day - Day 60

This is Caleb the cat. She's a 14 year old barn cat that has more than 9 lives.

When we first moved to the property the barn was overrun with mice and we needed a barn cat. A relative gave us one of her 'tom cats' and we named him Bob.

That was until he gave birth to three cute kittens! After quickly fixing Bob, we named the three cats after our three children (regardless of gender).

Caleb the cat is the only own that is still around 14 years later. She nabs a drink of water any time she sees you with a pail!

We are all going to the dogs!

Day 7 of FFF Photo a Day

This is Avery, fresh from a romp outside as you can tell from her icy beard! She is a Newfie cross and for those that haven't already met her she's a gentle giant who has a need for affection that surpasses any mammal on earth. Once you start petting her she won't let you stop!

With her heavy coat, Avery loves this weather and can usually be found patrolling the property (or lying in the middle of the road!).  In the summer, she finds the coolest shade she can find and barely moves until the sun goes down.

Avery has been part of the farm (and our family) for several years now and she does a great job on keeping all predators and deer away from our animals and plants. She co-exists quite nicely with all the other animals on the farm, with the exception of the barn cat, who she seems to love to torment by eating her food and chasing her daily.
