<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today I leave the Dominican and Haiti and return home... My home by Canadian standards is not luxurious by any means... however I find myself reflecting on the blessings I have in a different way then when I arrived here. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My roof has leaked but we immediately fixed it... my electricity has wavered during storms but it always comes back on and for my entire life, I've taken this for granted. My toilet flushes, I can have daily hot showers and I have water that I can drink directly from the tap. Each of my three children have their own room, clothes that fit them and have or will complete public education with an readily available option to go on to University should they choose. When we get sick, we go to the doctor or hospital and couldn't imagine what it would be like not to have those options. We have land on which we can grow or raise enough food not only to nourish our family but many others. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Yes, we work hard for these things but I can't help thinking that a large part of our good fortune comes from the sheer luck that we were born where and when we were. Many of the people that I have met this past couple of weeks, work far harder than I do yet will likely never see the rewards that I take for granted. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So what do we do with that.... feeling anger or shame doesn't help, although I admit to feeling both this week. This week others who have walked this path before us, have encouraged me to think about how I can leverage my good fortune into opportunities to bless others less fortunate. Service to others has always been a strong value in my life but this experience has definitely made me think about how I could do more. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I come home with a sense of satisfaction that we changed Liliana and her children's lives for the better. We touched the young lives of hundreds of children in Haiti.... I just know that amongst those faces are the future community leaders that will lead the people of Calvaire to rise above the conditions they were born into. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Live Different is the organization that made this possible for our team. I have to say its quite an amazing and inspiring group of people. This organization has created a pyramid scheme of kindness and giving that can have ripple effects around the world. They focus on working mainly with Canadian youth to live differently and to make the world a better place. They create leaders that will have impact far greater than a couple of weeks a year. Having been involved for many years with 4H, I am impressed with the way in which Live Different engages youth, teaching skills that this world needs more of. Keep doing what you are doing! You are on the right track! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As I pack my suitcase, I think about the group of people who journeyed here with me. Some I knew before arriving, others were strangers on Day 1. We return home having had an intense experience that only we share. We cried, sweat and unfortunately sometimes bled together. We supported one another through moments of fear, sadness and joy. We all brought something different to the work that needed to be done. And we got it done! Thank you.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And now.... home! </span></div>

Unite in Haiti, the school built from Fransco’s dream and the school for 270
beautiful children. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The day was full…. Full of fun
and love and yet heartache and confusion. We accomplished our project of
painting the new classrooms in between playing with the children. It seems cliché
to suggest that all Haitian are beautiful but they are…. Their eyes are deep
and soulful and watching their oft serious faces burst into smiles is pure joy.</span></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While painting the classrooms was
awesome and needed, the real power in the day came when we fed the children. Having
walked through their homes the day before, we had a good idea that many
children may not have eaten that day before coming to school or perhaps for
several days. While it seemed small and insufficient faced with the scale of
the poverty and hunger, leaving those beautiful children with a fuller belly, a
bright place to study and some much needed school supplies, felt wonderful.</span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDVEztuI8Oda_9OagHDBi465O8tc1ZafBjCJ4g_QW4TIyiNFlWXTcP2A4tsd_n6AbzC5WdrFkwzIbrcCmo1jcvl7Z3Ab9FRGIJ58hL_hwlGIfxed3wsQcTcjliGsrqskVzf6Z5pg2dBr2K/s1600/2017-01-27+10.03.16.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjDVEztuI8Oda_9OagHDBi465O8tc1ZafBjCJ4g_QW4TIyiNFlWXTcP2A4tsd_n6AbzC5WdrFkwzIbrcCmo1jcvl7Z3Ab9FRGIJ58hL_hwlGIfxed3wsQcTcjliGsrqskVzf6Z5pg2dBr2K/s320/2017-01-27+10.03.16.jpg" width="320" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This trip….in particular the Haiti
portion, has raised so many questions and thoughts. I find it difficult to
process them all and anticipate finding it impossible to share the profound experience
with those back home. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">While feeding those children for one day was great… they
and their families need food security on an ongoing basis… they need sanitation
infrastructure in their community and electricity in their school. They need
homes. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It all seems overwhelming… it makes you question your priorities and
plans for your own life, it makes you feel shame for your own good fortune. We
need to help but in ways that are not a hand out… they need a hand up so they
can live a dignified and sustainable life. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOJAeSdHSMBSQuIzeGG-7pHHDk0pp-gDQMjn_KSTHKHX5fzMwnH14DkOfA9_GPVd6Z1wVYJ8fcLMASsfELB4hdG0HPZm-ZKEEJxHl0DfB-4twQlSu1YoErt-fUJCo6jdH_4XmAROa94z9j/s1600/2017-01-27+13.14.59.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOJAeSdHSMBSQuIzeGG-7pHHDk0pp-gDQMjn_KSTHKHX5fzMwnH14DkOfA9_GPVd6Z1wVYJ8fcLMASsfELB4hdG0HPZm-ZKEEJxHl0DfB-4twQlSu1YoErt-fUJCo6jdH_4XmAROa94z9j/s320/2017-01-27+13.14.59.jpg" width="240" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I don’t have the solution.
Organizations like Live Different who organized our trip are a start but they
can’t be the complete answer. Haiti is the third poorest country in the world.
Yes, there are other communities and countries that struggle with similar issues,
even inside Canada. There is enough food and resources in the world for
everyone yet so many go without while others live in excess. How do we correct
this… where do we start? <o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As I said, I am not sure, but I think
it starts with each of us….<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_FuX68yylyMACGqh2e06LRzhHrAKQR9eW59wq81JbbEpxHYJ8qaSk1cYjrJIfzoOvcTwHbTyjRjMbBawvplDR281Yhz62SUlzuzo6OUHe8aEshcUfLw6ed0raC4P6OqFoktz9W2yFTdTS/s1600/2017-01-25+14.00.50.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_FuX68yylyMACGqh2e06LRzhHrAKQR9eW59wq81JbbEpxHYJ8qaSk1cYjrJIfzoOvcTwHbTyjRjMbBawvplDR281Yhz62SUlzuzo6OUHe8aEshcUfLw6ed0raC4P6OqFoktz9W2yFTdTS/s320/2017-01-25+14.00.50.jpg" width="240" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today we turned over the keys to a house and watched the creation of a home. A powerful end to a year of planning, fundraising and dreaming. An end to four days of construction by a team of fifteen who literally poured their blood, sweat and tears into every bucket of cement, every shovel of dirt, every cinder block... Watching fifteen people join with the family and the community of Nuevo Renacer to create a small and modest home for a woman with a huge heart was inspiring and overwhelming. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Liliana and her two children were given the key to their new home... a key to a door...the first time they have had a home with a door that locks and a roof that doesn't leak. A home that will withstand the floods and keep them dry and safe. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The week has been bittersweet as Liliana's story is sad and uncertain. Battling cancer, she is not certain that she will live in her home long but gains tremendous peace and hope from the knowledge that her children will have a home no matter what her future. We are ever hopeful that this hope gives her the strength she needs to fight the disease ravaging her body. </span></div>

This beautiful soul cares very deeply about the people of Nuevo Renacer and has worked tirelessly to leverage the help of organizations like Live Different to gain what her community needs to thrive and rise up. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Watching her walk throughout the neighbourhood, was a powerful experience. She was clearly respected and loved. She was everywhere at once and made such an impact everywhere she went. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

With her limited English and some gestures she told me that she doesn't do anything alone and that we are all better when we are together. She linked arms with me and tugged and said 'see, no pull away.. we are stronger like this'. While not an unfamiliar concept, coming from a woman who has made such a significant and palpable difference in a community that many would prefer to forget, was a potent and graphic example of leadership.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In all it was a day of many tears, much joy and important lessons we won't soon forget. </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2KAUxiCmNo22xqt8muENUFcTwhZbcVuyiZfjuwV2ac1fzXknaJonYm1-tKjbqw1iSeu8D_UhrbD6-neejnIM0MCaIoQGA_Qom4oqIphZI8hyphenhyphenhE9jc_9ZLfget8z3hNMc8nNdRyrrnc-EP/s1600/2017-01-20+15.02.55.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2KAUxiCmNo22xqt8muENUFcTwhZbcVuyiZfjuwV2ac1fzXknaJonYm1-tKjbqw1iSeu8D_UhrbD6-neejnIM0MCaIoQGA_Qom4oqIphZI8hyphenhyphenhE9jc_9ZLfget8z3hNMc8nNdRyrrnc-EP/s320/2017-01-20+15.02.55.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As many of you know, I (Leanne) have the incredible opportunity to be in the Dominican Republic and Haiti right now. I am part of a team of awesome people who are building homes, schools and other infrastructure for people who live in conditions that are overwhelming. Floods, poverty and government inaction mean they are surrounded by garbage, filth and poverty. However, today I also saw the wealth of community and love that they live within and was humbled by their grace and ability to find joy. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We are working with an incredible organization called Live Different which has built over 200 homes, schools, and other vital infrastructure. Today we had the opportunity to visit two communities (one rural and one urban) that Live Different has working in. We met many incredible people but two stand out for me. Two community leaders.... not because they were elected or sought power... leaders because they have stepped up, walked with their community and filled needs. Pastor Challa saw overwhelming need and knew that education was the first step. Sandra's love for her community radiates clearly from her beautiful face. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9iPLEiCVCj9BkjtoDXnNVIoHr3aOMETGCdNqpnuL7nfNxPgRLsFt1b6rPkMrJKtlDlY2SxwF2J2VX3gYeU2DPisE35Mnh9Bz446SOjAZfVz5DKiJLAe-62nEVbW-iieB-vQeX37VTdpF2/s1600/2017-01-20+13.59.48.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9iPLEiCVCj9BkjtoDXnNVIoHr3aOMETGCdNqpnuL7nfNxPgRLsFt1b6rPkMrJKtlDlY2SxwF2J2VX3gYeU2DPisE35Mnh9Bz446SOjAZfVz5DKiJLAe-62nEVbW-iieB-vQeX37VTdpF2/s320/2017-01-20+13.59.48.jpg" width="240" /></a>Today we also met Lalita and her two children, whose home we will be building. A woman who is struggling with overwhelming health challenges, yet shows such grace and gratitude for us. The connection was instant and powerful and I look forward to getting the chance to get to know Lalita and her family. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I prepare for bed, I am processing many thoughts and feelings... the most powerful is my reaction to the beach. While I took pictures, I don't think they do justice to the scale or power of the garbage and squalor that flows through the community and lands on the beach. All the garbage from the wealthy city folk is washed down the river and ends in the homes and lives of the beautiful people I met today. As I stared out over the vast expanse of trash, I felt shame, immense sadness and rage all at the same time. I can't begin to unpack all the thoughts and feelings that the sight created for me. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tomorrow we return to the community and begin to build. It will feel good to take action, however small. Lots to think about....</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This week ends a full year of weekly blogs of my random thoughts, pictures and musings from the farm. The year has flown by once again and I find it hard to believe that we are once again heading into a new year. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last year I shared a picture a day from the farm, a challenging yet rewarding practice that I enjoyed immensely except on the days I didn't. I enjoy sharing our successes and stories of folly and fun from the farm. I love hearing from the few of you who follow along and hope that every once in a while you get a chuckle or learn something new! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Today is Christmas Day and as we get set to eat a meal fully grown here on the farm, I feel immense gratitude that we have carved out a life that allows us to enjoy good food, fresh air and simple pleasures.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I hope that all of you are safe and warm with someone you love, awaiting the impending blizzard that is reportedly going to arrive shortly. Regardless of what traditions you celebrate this time of year, I hope they bring you peace, joy and grace as you move forward to a new year.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Cheers!</span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSMAh9NI5rMijHZ3pBxXfp1j_FCvNWXL0RxBu2lapdYx46JugpeyW8kBD_2toN07lMUwLi8TMUaJkOfMuQAaVl0vG3KcJ1ciXnx5TfKG1WyT6KL0rlBPBwjTbotvrJlg0ZSRrrYa0IfW0b/s1600/2016-04-15+20.39.43.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSMAh9NI5rMijHZ3pBxXfp1j_FCvNWXL0RxBu2lapdYx46JugpeyW8kBD_2toN07lMUwLi8TMUaJkOfMuQAaVl0vG3KcJ1ciXnx5TfKG1WyT6KL0rlBPBwjTbotvrJlg0ZSRrrYa0IfW0b/s200/2016-04-15+20.39.43.jpg" width="150" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many people have a favourite recipes that we make at this time of year. We haul out Grandma's shortbread or nanaimo recipes, prepare to make that special stuffing we only make once a year or enjoy some warm cider or eggnog that bring a rush of memories. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This year, I've discovered a new favorite that will likely be a regular feature in my repertoire! Sundried tomato and basil pesto cheese torte is festive, yummy and impressive! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Using a springform pan lined with plastic wrap, you layer a cream cheese/ricotta mixture with alternating layers of sundried tomato and then green basil pesto, freezing after each layer. It takes a day to make while you wait for it to freeze in between but it is well worth it! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRJw-NUfaofZhHJbeo_XSc0mUsZo-5j2tHrxOKvZW-uczdyYco0EXw7V1gdExH-ivXFWc4hJxUM_tC1259auE29WC0HEDowvkbGqPAaZX4o3JKNBkgWyA9Y8UKHHwTpyuAH5eUVXr8g5J9/s1600/2016-04-15+20.47.26.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRJw-NUfaofZhHJbeo_XSc0mUsZo-5j2tHrxOKvZW-uczdyYco0EXw7V1gdExH-ivXFWc4hJxUM_tC1259auE29WC0HEDowvkbGqPAaZX4o3JKNBkgWyA9Y8UKHHwTpyuAH5eUVXr8g5J9/s400/2016-04-15+20.47.26.jpg" width="300" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Once complete you cut in wedges with a hot knife and wrap individually. I keep them in the freezer, ready to grab and go. An impressive appetizer for any potluck! They kept well for months. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If you don't have the ingredients or the patience to make your own pestos, you can always purchase them pre-made from your local farmers or small business shop. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Interested in giving it a try? I found a number of different recipes on line by googling 'cream cheese sundried tomato basil pesto torte'. They were all fairly similar. Don't be scared off by various steps.... it is well worth it! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnT2SsnZVlzSTToMj-GaYXH23r_SaBUZDLUyQKdBaLIMDjIXAY0MEJRWTk1k_wX3V2Dhlr7jNQwKadmZBZbEcBv8f3lF1XZVYWeKSDTzUk3XzdZUzk-_oNwUIazrmFO-ixYqpm5XIXIwTK/s1600/2016-12-11+20.16.18+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnT2SsnZVlzSTToMj-GaYXH23r_SaBUZDLUyQKdBaLIMDjIXAY0MEJRWTk1k_wX3V2Dhlr7jNQwKadmZBZbEcBv8f3lF1XZVYWeKSDTzUk3XzdZUzk-_oNwUIazrmFO-ixYqpm5XIXIwTK/s400/2016-12-11+20.16.18+%25282%2529.jpg" width="256" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Last Christmas, my oldest son gave me a simple gift that I use everyday! A reclaimed frame around a board that he painted over with chalkboard paint, I've used it to post a weekly menu ever since. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Each Sunday night, I take a look at our schedule for the week, collect requests from the family and take stock of what we have on hand. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">When you raise the majority of your own food, you learn to cook what you have in abundance when you have it. For instance right now I have a pantry full of winter squash and potatoes that I need to find creative and yummy uses for! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After almost a year of creating weekly menus, I would highly recommend the practice to anyone and everyone! Taking time when you are neither hungry nor tired to plan out healthy meals for the week has helped us eat better, reduce food waste, decreased what we spend in the grocery store, and reduced the overall stress of figuring out what to put on the table everyday. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Now that both Farmer Phil and I are working full time off farm and the kids are all in school or university in the city during the day, there is no "supper fairy" preparing our meals in time for our arrival home. Our evenings are full with barn chores, 4H, ferrying children around and house work... anything to cut down on work is most welcome!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">I find the menu makes planning ahead much easier. We can look at what is planned for tomorrow or the next day and quickly assess what needs to come out the freezer... what can be prepped ahead of time or popped in the slow cooker. At the end of the day, when you are tired and hungry, its much easier to stick with the plan than come up with something new (and usually less healthy), especially when the rest of the family is looking forward to the advertised meal. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">And best of all... we don't have to face the daily question from everyone in the house..... "what's for supper?"... we simply point to the sign on the wall! </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This weekend we said goodbye to Ariane. After spending three months with us she returned home to Quebec and her family. She was here on an exchange program that focused on giving youth an opportunity to learn English (or French) and experience life in another province! Our daughter will head to Quebec in February to live with Ariane's family for three months. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This exchange program is one in a series of experiences that we as a family have engaged in over the past 20 years. We have hosted well over thirty people (mostly youth) and our children have had several opportunities to travel and experience other cultures that they otherwise would not likely have experienced. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">As I've written about previously, we have hosted so many folks from around the world in the interest of learning, growing and expanding our world without necessarily leaving the farm. And while I agree wholeheartedly with this and will continue to host... the goodbyes that are inevitable with any exchange program are challenging.....</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The packing up, the airport drive, the hugs and tears, do not get easier with repetition. The commitment to return, to visit, to write are always there. Some do, some don't.... but all become part of our families collective heart, our history, our memories. Each one has taught us something.... </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Yuka taught us our first Japanese words....</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Carwyn showed us how to judge sheep...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Haruka reminded us not to take ourselves to seriously....</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Ricardo taught us to listen to the purr of every car engine differently...</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">..... and Ariane showed us the joy of a competitive spirit and the importance of seizing every opportunity! When Ariane was around it was impossible to be grumpy... it was also impossible to keep any candy in the house that she didn't eventually find! You will be missed, dear heart!</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">So while I am certain that we are all richer for the open door and the welcome we hold for those from afar, today my heart is a wee bit tender and needs some rest... </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">...until we say Hello again.</span></div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTdMnSqQACORqqNyfkiOLKuFdfsSroDXe1QbRrm8EBddr33eKlp4Oi3yDKYoYiPJ8AIq3UTXg1VI4NavSNk8HRmJVPw8aG1DWJDRZ61N3CqkbHYe-n3YY52nAIpHWsbjbF-13HLgQ_FQXf/s1600/week+48+-+birds+in+the+field.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTdMnSqQACORqqNyfkiOLKuFdfsSroDXe1QbRrm8EBddr33eKlp4Oi3yDKYoYiPJ8AIq3UTXg1VI4NavSNk8HRmJVPw8aG1DWJDRZ61N3CqkbHYe-n3YY52nAIpHWsbjbF-13HLgQ_FQXf/s200/week+48+-+birds+in+the+field.jpg" width="150" /></span></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There is no end of debate both online and off about the ethics of raising animals for food. Our approach has been to listen to all sides and decide based on what seems right for our family and business with a view to a sustainable approach for our earth.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmlo_5xhDG3jcPIk1WyRuknWXn8js3cGwRVnKuVHKEjtNbppVL9R_v0KhNWOYkgg3myR8wl2n4FsNwxpyhpwPWLmpTa9yWX_88O-psAdFYNZuWnnmEQKWwDBOAPaqLASkGIyNvkfz0YYjw/s1600/week+48+-+mama.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmlo_5xhDG3jcPIk1WyRuknWXn8js3cGwRVnKuVHKEjtNbppVL9R_v0KhNWOYkgg3myR8wl2n4FsNwxpyhpwPWLmpTa9yWX_88O-psAdFYNZuWnnmEQKWwDBOAPaqLASkGIyNvkfz0YYjw/s200/week+48+-+mama.jpg" width="150" /></a><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We are blessed with space and time to raise animals in a manner that provides them with a good life, an ethical death and a modest impact on the world. I appreciate that not all will agree but it is a choice that we feel good about. As we choose to include meat in our diets, it feels right that we should take responsibility to nurture the animal kindly with affection, sunshine and natural food sources. In return, we are blessed with food that is free of chemicals and has a superior taste and nutrition.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">If we were not able to raise our food in such a way and we had to rely on commercially raised animals produced in factory like settings, I may make different choices about how we eat. </span></div>

I encourage everyone to get to know where and how your food is raised whether its animal or vegetable. Get to know your farmer, producer, baker, butcher and small business owner and ask questions and visit farms. What you put in your mouth is important! Be aware, informed and engaged! </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In our family, Christmas is a big deal.... </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">We plan and conspire all year round to create, search for and find just the right thing for each other. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Most of our gifts must be made, upcycled or re-used but this year we are also 'allowed' to buy from local stores. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">It always amazes me what we come up. For us Christmas is not a religious ceremony but one built on family memories and traditions.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The season begins on November 12th and lasts to Jan. 2nd. (our poor tree usually has only about two needles left by New Years' Day! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">My No. #2 son showed us all up by making and wrapping the first gift before the tree was even up! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This weekend saw most of us ramping up the list making and planning and holiday tunes were at full blast! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Next weekend the tree goes up and the eggnog season begins! What are your holiday traditions? </span></div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The time change and approaching winter solstice set the stage for a week of doing chores in the dark and feeling like you weren't completely sure what time it was. I've never been able to explain why gaining an hour creates such havoc in our sleep patterns! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Like many folks, I found myself swept up in the American trainwreck on Tuesday. I cycled through a series of emotions from horror, to anger to sadness. I do not yet feel like I've fully processed what has happened and what it means for so many. The symbolism of Trump's victory casts long shadows on the progressive lifestyle that I so often feel so grateful for in North America. While I hope that all our fears are misguided and unfounded, I do not hold out much hope on that front. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq_c8rNqd0S-PH4GeN_2Tujk_ghdJ1IaOw6QAinydk3UaC9JNGjPAYBJCaFFWbtA0ccTmP6wO5UMtC7TH4oNkY4IFKZ1D4OuAz_nk_oUHn2al6XIAH06sZ_JY_Ddw7C0_GavFCco5BCFdc/s1600/week+%252346+-+mads+on+tractor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhq_c8rNqd0S-PH4GeN_2Tujk_ghdJ1IaOw6QAinydk3UaC9JNGjPAYBJCaFFWbtA0ccTmP6wO5UMtC7TH4oNkY4IFKZ1D4OuAz_nk_oUHn2al6XIAH06sZ_JY_Ddw7C0_GavFCco5BCFdc/s320/week+%252346+-+mads+on+tractor.jpg" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Tuesday's events in the US, seemed to make Friday's somber ceremonies of remembrance for the fallen, whose shoulders we all stand on, seem fragile and bittersweet. Add the loss of a much loved and talented Canadian icon and the week seemed too much to bear. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">All that being said, I find myself on Sunday night feeling more optimistic and content and ready to continue to celebrate and honour the values that are important to me. Looking back, I find a simple recipe has soothed my heavy heart. </span></div>
<br />
<ul>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Surround yourself with those you love</span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Add in some cuddles and laughter with young souls (babies and puppies work best)</span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Work until you hurt at something worthwhile</span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Blend in plenty of fresh local food</span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Marinate heavily in sunshine and gentle breezes</span></li>
<li style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Repeat...</span></li>
</ul>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></span></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many people ask us why we raise goats? </span><br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">So this week, I decided to run through the top five reasons we enjoy raising dairy goats: </span> </div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJhNiPWMPtaZ9-7FVVfHdmoiB1j2IHCdcD7shD1egtOTE8yKhWhHumfsObzuM0II82TEXO4lJYtWu4RmjF8Pw0XCaqTzT93pBAqTY0g-1FVy66ZuUXUnWWppXvHUjEH2DHhjPZOdgy3JDl/s1600/week+%252345+-+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJhNiPWMPtaZ9-7FVVfHdmoiB1j2IHCdcD7shD1egtOTE8yKhWhHumfsObzuM0II82TEXO4lJYtWu4RmjF8Pw0XCaqTzT93pBAqTY0g-1FVy66ZuUXUnWWppXvHUjEH2DHhjPZOdgy3JDl/s320/week+%252345+-+3.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<ol>
<li>Goats can clear brush and grass from an area very efficiently and effectively. We rotate them around our farm using electric mesh fence and they clear weeds and long grass from any area we put them in. Goats are browser as oppose to grazers so they will eat woody growth such as bushes and small trees as well. Because they are effective browsers their input costs (what it costs to feed them) tends to be lower than other animals who eat only grass or require formulated feed. </li>
<li>Goats produce a creamy milk that tends to be easier to digest particular to those that find they have sensitivities to milk or lactose. Goat's milk is higher in calcium, magnesium, potassium and Vitamin C than cow's milk. </li>
<li>Goat's milk is easy to convert to other yummy things! We use our goat's milk to make yogurt, cheese, ice cream, and caramels along with less yummy but no less useful items such as soap! </li>
<li>Goats are smaller and need less equipment and fencing than cows (when they stay inside the fence!) Given their smaller size, they tend to be easier to handle and milk as well as moving from one area to another.</li>
<li>Goats are entertaining! I think I could spend (have spent) hours watching a herd of goats interact with each other. They all have such unique personalities and are expressive animals. We enjoy their antics (except their escapes) and they really become part of the family. </li>
</ol>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
As the harvest eases, I'm in that sweet spot of having lots of extra food and a bit more time to create some new things! So this week, I experimented with a few new treats in the kitchen! </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A over abundance of red peppers (whoever thought I would write that phrase!) means we are searching for more ways to preserve or process them. We decided to try to dehydrate some peppers as a chewy snack as well as to keep for later in the winter. They can be re-hydrated in stews, sauces and soups. </div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-mtKCC9y_4n_UdKfjmaqvc8C3HgWsn00rxwiRxqqymTaYCvbJ4o5eyqyo7-trE79rmwYp4N9uTVzH925PixO4oTuSk7BS2_YCwt7Et2HF5t_mzKmnG_d29U273KDgMIQysdw6roKDPYSn/s1600/week+%252344+-+chick+peas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-mtKCC9y_4n_UdKfjmaqvc8C3HgWsn00rxwiRxqqymTaYCvbJ4o5eyqyo7-trE79rmwYp4N9uTVzH925PixO4oTuSk7BS2_YCwt7Et2HF5t_mzKmnG_d29U273KDgMIQysdw6roKDPYSn/s200/week+%252344+-+chick+peas.jpg" width="150" /></a>We also tried roasting spiced chickpeas! These were tasty and an interesting snack. You can make them as spicy or savory as you want depending on the spices you add. They didn't get as crunchy as I was hoping so I popped the leftovers into the dehydrator to see if they will crisp up. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibybaxSZFvuB1y209dydimJkuaqFYGSdx_EyZBV1GNa77xauv2dAtAKrDR0XQiL3kocR5vsm7DgQ0czJsi9KIfigeov-E8ctbFipfUuJp04qRnKxCh_FfyQGJNpVvNKtc0fBUIPh5-bAeX/s1600/week+%252344+-+tostadas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibybaxSZFvuB1y209dydimJkuaqFYGSdx_EyZBV1GNa77xauv2dAtAKrDR0XQiL3kocR5vsm7DgQ0czJsi9KIfigeov-E8ctbFipfUuJp04qRnKxCh_FfyQGJNpVvNKtc0fBUIPh5-bAeX/s320/week+%252344+-+tostadas.jpg" width="240" /></a>Next up was a new recipe designed to use up our butternut squash! The night before I roasted the butternut in the oven with a little bit of olive oil and garlic, mashed with cumin and chili powder. Next I marinated some black beans in some lime juice overnight. When I got home from work, I was toasted pita bread in the oven, spread the squash mixture over the warm pita, followed by the beans, avocado and drizzled with yogurt mixed with some lime juice. For bit of heat, you could sprinkle some cayenne over the top. Turned out pretty good! I think a little bit of cilantro on top would really add some flavour! Definitely one I would do again! </div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTpA7QTEmYjdD1jlfm07WrwZL_rA3mpifJTBnPPKqhbO-qvCvzHCp1XFWIOy0UJhylI4odjSUpAiOjipeSs26R8LTcJENU1-7knBggGZsGuvGJmZeloNr8kAZdPmlsxxVxSFp0GXZHrLT7/s1600/2016-10-30+19.28.44.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTpA7QTEmYjdD1jlfm07WrwZL_rA3mpifJTBnPPKqhbO-qvCvzHCp1XFWIOy0UJhylI4odjSUpAiOjipeSs26R8LTcJENU1-7knBggGZsGuvGJmZeloNr8kAZdPmlsxxVxSFp0GXZHrLT7/s200/2016-10-30+19.28.44.jpg" width="150" /></a>I've included a picture of our new lunch option section in our fridge! I found that while six people should take a healthy lunch, if there wasn't something relatively easy to grab and go, often people were either not taking a lunch or taking less healthy options! So we resorted to a lunch drawer in the fridge in which we try to keep healthy options ready such as cut vegetables, cream cheese swirls, hummus and mixed nuts and dried fruit. Definitely makes lunches easier and more accessible. Means that less people are 'hangry' (angry from hunger) when they come home from school and work! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4PvmGqohiw1bHuv3-9D002YkZoj36wBZNZZwW6FTIk6fdvlAc7STgqRxh1QVpwkYL4bVrHahuFCn2HZZY5hyVcOiYLf2OyCtgab-Or8IqE45n6VK97_H7rQ7dW5-DUXDhyWKhkyZmKA8K/s1600/2016-10-30+17.45.11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg4PvmGqohiw1bHuv3-9D002YkZoj36wBZNZZwW6FTIk6fdvlAc7STgqRxh1QVpwkYL4bVrHahuFCn2HZZY5hyVcOiYLf2OyCtgab-Or8IqE45n6VK97_H7rQ7dW5-DUXDhyWKhkyZmKA8K/s320/2016-10-30+17.45.11.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And finally.... tonight's supper was salmon cakes with fresh leeks from the garden! Salmon (canned or fresh), mayo, eggs, panko breadcrumbs and old bay seasoning are mixed well with your choice of veggies such as green pepper, onions or in our case leeks! Then I pan fried the patties in canola oil. We served them with a curry and mayo mixture that added some zip! They disappeared so they couldn't be that bad! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tonight I have a Farmer's Sausage and Potato feast in the crockpot that is smelling wonderful! (for tomorrow's supper). The weekly menu includes a few other new recipes such as Smothered Chicken and an Apple Cider glazed Roast Turkey! </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Wishing you a yummy week! What are you making? </div>

At times they are babes in arms whose eyes speak volumes, if you only pause to listen. Or indeed many are grandmothers or grandfathers whose hands are wiser than most of us. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; text-align: justify;">For me, my wise ones are often animals. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The fields are cleared and the majority of the harvest is canned, preserved or drying. As the last few weeks of Harvest 2016 wind down, I'm all about shortcuts to make our harvest last. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Today I made sofrito, a mixture that you can make up when your tomatoes, peppers and onions are fresh and bountiful and fresh as a base for many recipes all winter. </span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Sofrito is most commonly used a base for Latin, Puerto Rican, or Italian cooking... but in my mind, there are so many recipes that you need chopped tomatoes, onions, garlic and peppers that it is so handy to have some of this ready to go. Freeze it in ice cube trays and then pop out into freezer bags so that you can grab a tablespoon at a time or freeze flat in freezer bags (I do 2 cups per bag) so that you can grab for recipes all winter long. </span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Of course, if you are short on freezer space, I imagine you could can sofrito using a water bath similar to salsa or pasta sauce. </span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ0GkaN2hxlRsvi1S_Nj_N2y1wF645Swl8EZBz6GfbHOkfHHmbN19jf8U-_iynhJqTIsKf9kmuHviSYYmuJq-zJyqjQXfThFnmAvW55Y1wYqGn8R5seXWiFO4KyDmh_s3_iqziGIh1R33B/s1600/IMG_4956-748830.JPG" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: justify;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_6342253439405445506" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ0GkaN2hxlRsvi1S_Nj_N2y1wF645Swl8EZBz6GfbHOkfHHmbN19jf8U-_iynhJqTIsKf9kmuHviSYYmuJq-zJyqjQXfThFnmAvW55Y1wYqGn8R5seXWiFO4KyDmh_s3_iqziGIh1R33B/s320/IMG_4956-748830.JPG" /></span></a><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I use these storage tips for all kinds of garden produce. After making a batch of pesto from my basil harvest, I pop it into ice cube trays to access easier a bit at a time. </span></div>
<br />
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="mobile-photo" style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This year we have a large number of sweet red peppers that are ripening late in the season (thanks to the late frost). One of the ways I extend our harvest of peppers, is to roast them, skin them and throw them into the vitamix (blender) along with a healthy amount of garlic. This mixture gets spooned into (you guessed it) ice cube trays and is used for pasta sauce, red pepper dip, and throwing into chili, stews and various sauces. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What are your tips and tricks for extending your harvest and dealing with an overabundance of any one veggie at this time of year? </span></div>

So much to give thanks for this holiday weekend! After a very full week, the girls (Leanne, Taryn, Ariane & Grandma) took off for a girls weekend down to South Dakota, where Philip's sister and brother-in-law live.<br />
<br />
We were able to give Ariane a full ranching experience... complete with driving cattle, grooming, trailering and riding horses, bottle feeding calves and various other silliness.<br />
<br />
The males on the farm stayed home and worked hard pulling all the plants from the field and getting the barn ready for winter.... (involves a lot of shoveling...).<br />
<br />
We came home to a beautiful turkey meal with all the fixings, completely grown here on the farm.<br />
<br />
I give thanks for family, both near and far... for good food grown the way nature intended.... for laughter and hard work. My life is blessed to include all of these!<br />

The week was spent catching birds (chickens and turkeys) and then trying to squeeze them into the freezers! A big thank you to all our customers who came out to pick up their chickens and turkeys today. It was such a beautiful day!<br />
<br />
Oakley enjoyed herself immensely as she had lots of visitors! As a rescue horse she was very thin when she arrived at the farm. Only a month later and she is filled out nicely and seems to be enjoying her new friends!<br />

In fact some veggies do better in the fall with the cool nights than in the hot summer weathers. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: start;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: start;">It is always a bit of a guessing game on when the first frost will occur and how long you can leave things out in the field. We need enough time to do prep for next spring but don't want to pull plants until we absolutely have to! The other factor of course, is how much processing, drying, canning and prep for storage you can do at one time!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: start;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;">This time of year, the kitchen is always full with canning salsa, pasta sauce, pickling and dehydrating, making soups to freeze and pesto galore! This week after our usual weekly batch of salsa and pasta sauce, we made a load of kale chips, roasted red pepper sauce, a huge batch of pesto and some late pickles out of the abundance of cucumbers we have left.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; text-align: justify;">This coming week doesn't look like it will come with frost and we are hoping to gather up all the herbs for drying, dig up those that are coming in the house for the winter and mulch those that will weather the cold season outside.</span></div>

We are hopeful that he will earn his keep working on the farm helping move livestock and keeping predators away but for now he's simply entertaining.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Today we welcomed approximately 120 visitors to the farm for Open Farm Day. A big thank you to all those that came out to learn what we do and why we do it. While it was a little wet for much of the day, the clouds eventually cleared and the sun shone. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The event takes alot of work and planning so the whole family is involved. From selling veggies to parking cars to touring visitors around, everyone has a job. In between working the cash, our oldest son created this fantastic video so you too can catch some glimpses of the farm. </span><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Alas we have come to the end of the summer... the end of our CSA share and its just about time to start putting the garden to bed for awhile. The season has been somewhat underwhelming with a number of veggies having a tough year. </span></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our eggplants, broccoli and cauliflower, carrots and beets not to mention our kale - have all struggled or lacked vigor. The frequent and large rains were not conducive to high yields for those crops. Luckily when you diversify and have many different products you are seldom completely wiped out due to bad weather. Our baskets and bellies were never empty and nature's bounty was as always awe-inspiring. </span></div>
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">To our shareholders, thank you for sharing in our year, both when it was bountiful as well when things happened to be scarce! We love interacting with you each week both in person and online! We hope you will give us the opportunity to feed you again next year! Just a reminder that we do have other products available throughout the rest of the year.... check back to our <a href="http://fenezfolliesfarm.blogspot.ca/p/products.html" target="_blank">Products Available</a> page on our website frequently for updated availability of meats, eggs and other goodies! </span></div>

Now throw in a curveball and a tragic and sudden goodbye... week #37 has been full of the good, the bad and the ugly. </span><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Our kids all began school this week and Farmer Phil along with them (as he works at the highschool). The juggling of school, off farm work and farm work got a little bit crazier. </span></div>

So he (and all of us) didn't need the three broken bones in his foot the night before his first day. He is gaining fresh appreciation for why accessibility needs to be universal and woven into all building design. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first day of school for our two youngest kids (and Philip) was rocked by the tragic death of a long standing teacher on his way to school. While our children weren't taught by Mike Slobodian (Slobo as everyone called him), he was a much loved man who among other things took many highschool kids on annual canoe trips each year. Watching the school community come together to grieve, say goodbye and eventually to say goodbye has been sad yet rewarding. Rewarding to see how people reach out, help one another and look out for those that are struggling. The event certainly reminds you how quick lives can be altered and to remember to tell each other how much we mean to one another when we can. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">This weekend we welcomed Ariane into our home and hearts. <div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Our second last week of our 2016 CSA share and we are getting melon-dramatic! This week our shareholders will enjoy watermelon and cantaloupe! I must say they smell wonderful! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Both melons can be eaten without any preparation besides cutting however you can certainly also get fancy by making sorbet or cocktails with them.. </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If for some reason you aren't able to eat your melons right away and you want to freeze them for later, that works too.. they will be a bit more softer or mushier when they are thawed but can be great added to smoothies! </span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When Farmer Phil was in Japan he saw that they take their melons very seriously. Cantaloupe and watermelon go for $10-$20 each! Watermelons are often grown in molds so they are square! </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> Have you ever had a square watermelon?</span></div>

And this week, it always seems to feel especially so. The Sept long weekend marks the start of school, the end of vacations and what seems like an almost instant shift to fall weather. </span></div>

</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We have spent time this week getting ready for the coming winter including canning, harvesting, organizing and purging. </span><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">We look back at the goals or intentions that we set at the beginning of the summer and feel pride and chagrin in equal measure...That siding is not likely going to get painted. And that new fence in the corral is going to be re-scheduled for spring. But we relish in the new cattle, pigs and horse that have joined our farm family this year and are tired but satisfied that we fed our CSA shareholders well despite the somewhat miserable growing season and both of us working full time. </span></div>

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I can't believe its the last week of August! Summer feels like it has evaporated overnight. Cooler nights and fall crops are upon us.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Week ten brings our shareholders another large haul of deliciousness but I specifically wanted to mention two yellow gems they will find in their box.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVnnIZO3y2Y2GQxZQHb6849gCdRi9fGLt7-wkpVo-Jgt4RY6TzyeS3509-UfYFgXgh_48nk3bjLGUEuUTODa462V61KUXn9TnRvY0Mr3kMuf6ZXeFYLwLe2kcErb28fHHnK7S0yOHZApN3/s1600/week+10+-+ground+cherries.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVnnIZO3y2Y2GQxZQHb6849gCdRi9fGLt7-wkpVo-Jgt4RY6TzyeS3509-UfYFgXgh_48nk3bjLGUEuUTODa462V61KUXn9TnRvY0Mr3kMuf6ZXeFYLwLe2kcErb28fHHnK7S0yOHZApN3/s1600/week+10+-+ground+cherries.jpg" /></span></a><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The first is a pale yellow oval shaped fall veggie known as a spaghetti squash. This vegetable gets its name from the texture of its fruit when baked. To cook, simply cut in half lengthwise and scoop out the seeds. Drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper, then bake at 400F for 35-45 minutes. Dragging a fork through the cooked squash results in noodle shaped pieces that can easily substitute for regular pasta in many noodle dishes.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The second yellow gem are ground cherries. Our CSA shareholders will find a sampling of these flavourful cherries in their baskets this week. Ground cherries are in the same family as tomatoes and closely related to tomatillos (same papery husk) and taste both sweet and tropical. Some people have said that they taste like a cross between a tomato and pineapple! Ground cherries are ready in early/late fall and thus we are sharing a snack size sample with our shareholders. As larger varieties are available, you can use ground cherries to make jam, chutney or wine!</span><br />
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="background-color: white;">
<div style="line-height: 20.79px;">
<div style="color: #333333; line-height: 20.79px;">
<div style="line-height: 20.79px;">
<div style="font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif;">
<div style="font-family: arial, tahoma, helvetica, freesans, sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; line-height: 20.79px;">So... What's in the Box this week?</span></div>

The roads are busy with grain trucks rumbling past and the dust from the combines fills the air. Harvest on our farm lasts a long time and involves many activities. Given the diverse plants and animals we grow and raise, fall is an intense time! We pick for both our customers as well as for us and of course, then have to preserve, can, dry or store our food for the winter as well. This means lots of late nights in the kitchen....<br />
<br />
The week held much excitement and milestones along with the steady harvest:<br />
<br />

<li>Patty and her grown piglets have spent the week escaping their corral... at times joining the cows and goats and other times ranging around the property. I think its turning into a bit of a game now for them. Funny in the abstract but tiring and time consuming in reality. </li>
<li>We welcomed another new soul to the farm.... Oakley, a sorrel quarterhorse came to stay mid-week and is settling in well. Oakley was a rescue horse that has finally found her forever home. </li>
<li>Our youngest celebrated her fifteen birthday.</li>
<li>We got off the farm to witness the marriage of Farmer Phil's nephew and his lovely partner. Congratulations to Kyle and Sam along with their children Sawyer and Lochlin.</li>
<li>My second batch of kombucha was a success and my third is on the go. I learned much with my first batch! </li>
<li>We canned over 30 pints of salsa and pasta sauce! </li>
<li>Our middle child got his driver's license! (look out world!)</li>
<li>We messed up the date for our chicken processing with the abbatoir and had to do a dash with about 2/3 of the birds in the back of the truck! </li>
<li>Oh and we harvested day and night.....I actually caught myself thinking wistfully of winter...</li>
</ul>
<div>
Looking forward to the coming week, as all my duckies (children) are home, I have the week off my off-farm job and Farmer Phil doesn't go back to work until the following week! Hope your week is filled with laughter and love. </div>
