Week #39 - Preparation and puppies

While the long range weather forecast is suggesting that the coming winter will be brutally cold and snowy on the Prairies, the fall has thus far been relatively warm and many veggies are continuing to produce and ripen. In fact some veggies do better in the fall with the cool nights than in the hot summer weathers.

It is always a bit of a guessing game on when the first frost will occur and how long you can leave things out in the field. We need enough time to do prep for next spring but don't want to pull plants until we absolutely have to! The other factor of course, is how much processing, drying, canning and prep for storage you can do at one time!

This time of year, the kitchen is always full with canning salsa, pasta sauce, pickling and dehydrating, making soups to freeze and pesto galore! This week after our usual weekly batch of salsa and pasta sauce, we made a load of kale chips, roasted red pepper sauce, a huge batch of pesto and some late pickles out of the abundance of cucumbers we have left.

This coming week doesn't look like it will come with frost and we are hoping to gather up all the herbs for drying, dig up those that are coming in the house for the winter and mulch those that will weather the cold season outside.

Our last batch of chickens and turkeys will go in on Monday night this week, so hope for a dry night with light winds to make catching 200 birds in an open pasture a little more comfortable.

Our regular followers will know that Ozzie, a blue heeler puppy came to the farm last week and it looks like he might be a permanent resident! At 9-10 weeks old he creates chaos most of the time but compensates with a cuteness factor that is off the charts! We are hopeful that he will earn his keep working on the farm helping move livestock and keeping predators away but for now he's simply entertaining.

Hope your upcoming week has some puppies cuddles in it..... after all every week should, don't you think!

Week #35 - Summer reflection

Summer in Manitoba is short... And this week, it always seems to feel especially so. The Sept long weekend marks the start of school, the end of vacations and what seems like an almost instant shift to fall weather.

We have spent time this week getting ready for the coming winter including canning, harvesting, organizing and purging. We look back at the goals or intentions that we set at the beginning of the summer and feel pride and chagrin in  equal measure...That siding is not likely going to get painted. And that new fence in the corral is going to be re-scheduled for spring. But we relish in the new cattle, pigs and horse that have joined our farm family this year and are tired but satisfied that we fed our CSA shareholders well despite the somewhat miserable growing season and both of us working full time.

Our family was blessed with much this summer from a trip to Costa Rica for our oldest, a realization of a lifelong dream for our youngest as she brought home her horse and our middle son hit the road as he passed his drivers test and is free to roam. (much to his mama's worry).

September is often a busy month, full of change, stress and the compression that comes from new things starting before the old ones have fully finished...Take time this month to breathe, to enjoy what is typically a time of lovely weather and great food.

Week #34 - Abundance of all shapes and sizes....

Harvest is in full swing both on our property as well as in the surrounding grain fields. The roads are busy with grain trucks rumbling past and the dust from the combines fills the air. Harvest on our farm lasts a long time and involves many activities. Given the diverse plants and animals we grow and raise, fall is an intense time! We pick for both our customers as well as for us and of course, then have to preserve, can, dry or store our food for the winter as well. This means lots of late nights in the kitchen....

The week held much excitement and milestones along with the steady harvest:

  • Patty and her grown piglets have spent the week escaping their corral... at times joining the cows and goats and other times ranging around the property. I think its turning into a bit of a game now for them. Funny in the abstract but tiring and time consuming in reality.
  • We welcomed another new soul to the farm.... Oakley, a sorrel quarterhorse came to stay mid-week and is settling in well. Oakley was a rescue horse that has finally found her forever home.
  • Our youngest celebrated her fifteen birthday.
  • We got off the farm to witness the marriage of Farmer Phil's nephew and his lovely partner. Congratulations to Kyle and Sam along with their children Sawyer and Lochlin.
  • My second batch of kombucha was a success and my third is on the go. I learned much with my first batch!
  • We canned over 30 pints of salsa and pasta sauce!
  • Our middle child got his driver's license! (look out world!)
  • We messed up the date for our chicken processing with the abbatoir and had to do a dash with about 2/3 of the birds in the back of the truck!
  • Oh and we harvested day and night.....I actually caught myself thinking wistfully of winter...
Looking forward to the coming week, as all my duckies (children) are home, I have the week off my off-farm job and Farmer Phil doesn't go back to work until the following week! Hope your week is filled with laughter and love.

Only on her birthday can she wear her boots in the house

Week #32 - August Sunday kitchen tour

Our kitchen is the centre of our house both literally as well as symbolically.

Dominated by a huge table made by our oldest son that can comfortably sit 10-12 people, there is always something going on in this room. In August, that is particularly true as harvest is in full swing and there is generally some food being cooked, dried, fermented or frozen.

Today, for example, we have a few things in process...

-Fresh tomatoes, onions and peppers ready to be roasted for a new batch of salsa

-Apple/Peach pie filling simmering in the slow cooker

-My first batch of kombucha is bubbling along!

-My sourdough starter is getting its weekly feeding (not shown)

-Ever present bins of produce waiting to be processed or packed into our CSA boxes.

.... and the obligatory pile of dirty dishes

What's cooking in your kitchen this week?

Bittersweet...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 284

It is always a little bit bittersweet the day we clear the field and till. It means the end of another season of lessons learned, challenges & successes and of course, most of all delicious food.

It also means we can look ahead to a period of more rest and the ability to focus on other things.

A day of mixed feelings and aching muscles....

Rescue mission

FFF Photo a Day - Day 281

With frost a more regular occurrence we rescued our rosemary plants and brought them inside for winter. They smell so good!

Harvest means happy hens!

FFF Photo a Day - Day 280

Harvest inevitably means lots of leftover, not quite perfect veggies for the chickens. This makes the girls very happy... and happy hens are a good thing!

Good times!

FFF Photo a Day - Day 278

During harvest time, there are many late nights bringing in produce from the fields and processing it all once its in....

At this time, many hands are needed and appreciated! Yesterday we sat as a group around the kitchen table husking ground cherries. (We are making wine with them this year!)

Thanks everyone!

Tucking it away...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 276

It's that time of year when we begin to tuck away food for the winter season. Our cold storage room is full to the brim with squash, onions, potatoes, and tomatillos.

What are you tucking away to enjoy when the snow comes? #winteriscoming

Fall upon us...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 267

This autumn display brought to you by the first full day of fall! My personal favorite time of year, the bugs are disappearing and temperatures are a bit more comfortable for working in.

As we tuck food away, preserving, drying and canning in preparation for the upcoming winter, it feels great to see the pantry fill.

Harvesting herbs

FFF Photo a Day - Day 262

Today felt like summer but the fall is upon us and I was busy harvesting herbs to dry. Here my bundles of oregano wait  for a place on the drying rack...

Soup for you!

FFF Photo a Day - Day 260

Fall is the season of soup! With so many root vegetables, squash and other fall offerings, it is a perfect time to simmer up some soup.

We freeze it both supper size as well as individual servings to bring for lunch at school or work.

Soup is good food...

Our basket runneth over...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 257

As our growing season winds down, we continue to harvest what feels like mountains of food.

I have to admit to feeling that the rather simplistic solution to universal food security for all is right outside everyone's back door! #harvestthepowerofnature

Hello, September!

FFF Photo a Day - Day 244

Hello, September! You bring:
  • harvest and homework;
  • preserving and preparation;
  • cooler temps and warmer clothes; smoke in the sky and leaves on the ground;
  • fall resolutions after summer regrets; bales in the fields, tractors on the road...

They are taking over...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 229

Harvesting is becoming more and more a challenge as the squash plants take over. Wading through prickly curcubita (aka squash plants) is uncomfortable and challenging.

This year these plants (butternut, pumpkin, pattypan, and spaghetti squash) are happy and thriving, making their way into rows of other vegetables.

Time to get the machete out!

All the colours of the rainbow...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 220

Our cherry tomatoes are ripening quickly.

As I picked them today, I found myself humming Louis Armstrong's 'What a Wonderful World'.

Just seemed appropriate somehow...

Tonnes of tomatoes!

FFF Photo a Day - Day 215

Lots of tomatoes for our CSA customers this week. Red, yellow, orange, and few purple so far - all delicious!

Bountiful!

FFF Photo a Day - Day 206

Went for a meander around the property today and this was the result!

We are into the part of the growing season where we can't harvest fast enough! #bountiful

Green goodness!

FFF Photo a Day - Day 155

A box of goodness picked today as I thinned and harvested our spinach next to the house.

This was planted back in early March and was snowed on several times! Spinach loves cool weather.

We are drying this batch to grind into green energy powder!

Last of the Sunshine...

FFF Photo a Day - Day 39

We finished off last summer's potatoes yesterday. We also only have six wrinkly tomatoes left and two small squash. Whether we like it or not, we are entering that irritating time of having to buy all our vegetables at the store.

It will likely be at least four-five months before we once again can taste real sunshine in our food. :(
